The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a globally recognized 20-character alphanumeric code designed to identify legal entities.
Each LEI is unique and exclusive, ensuring that once an LEI is assigned to a legal entity, it cannot be reassigned to another.
It's important to note that an LEI does not substitute a company's national registry code. Read further...
Starting from January 3, 2018, any legal entity that conducts regulated financial activities or transactions on markets or platforms needs an active Legal Entity Identifier (LEI).
This also applies to legal entities involved in financial transactions with securities or derivatives, like stocks, bonds, ETFs, and various types of swaps. Read further...
LEIpapa is the official registration agent of Ubisecure RapidLEI, offering a streamlined process to register, renew, and transfer LEI codes.
With LEIpapa, individuals and organizations can easily obtain an LEI code, an essential requirement for entities conducting financial transactions and complying with various regulatory frameworks. The website provides a user-friendly documentation section where users can find all the necessary information on how to register an LEI code.
By logging to the LEIpapa web app, users can quickly complete the registration process and receive their LEI code, ensuring they are compliant and ready to conduct business in the global marketplace.
A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) code may be issued for any of the following entities:
- Incorporated Companies and Registered Subsidiaries;
- Non-Profits (Registered Organizations);
- Sole Proprietors (Having a distinct identity within a business register);
- International Branch offices (The Head Office must already have an LEI);
- Funds and Trusts.
The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) was presented after the 2008 global financial crisis. Its purpose is to set a worldwide standard for clearly recognizing entities involved in financial dealings.
The idea behind the LEI system is to offer a uniform way to identify parties in financial transactions worldwide, making the global financial system safer and more open.
Once issued, a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) remains active for one year. It needs to be renewed every year to stay active. We make things easier by offering 2-5 years plans, so you don't have to renew your LEI every year.
If you don't renew your LEI, it will expire and get "lapsed" status. This could cause problems with financial activities and reporting duties, possibly leading to transaction cancellations and fines for non-compliance. You can renew lapsed LEI at any time if your entity is still active.
Yes. The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) has published the Global LEI Index. It provides information, updated daily, on all LEIs issued to date.
Any interested party can easily access and search the complete LEI data pool free of charge using LEIpapa LEI Search tool or on the GLEIF website.
An LEI record is publicly available and includes details about an entity such as its name, address, who owns it, and other info that helps identify the entity and how it's connected to other entities. It also shows who issued the LEI and whether the LEI is currently valid (has active status).
For more details, check out the LEI Search tool.
LEI codes are issued by organizations called Local Operating Units (LOUs). These LOUs team up with Registration Agents (such as LEIpapa). While Registration Agents don't directly issue LEI codes, they help businesses by guiding them through registering, renewing, and transferring LEI codes by handling certain steps, making the process simpler and faster".
LEIpapa is an official Registration Agent of Ubisecure RapidLEI.
Obtaining a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) for Funds and Trusts is essential and mirrors the process for other entities. When you register an LEI for a Fund or Trust, just specify your entity type as a FUND or TRUST accordingly during the registration process and we will do the rest.
When you register an LEI for the Fund Management Company (AIFM), which is not a Fund (AIF) itself but manages the Fund, please choose GENERAL as the entity type. Read more...
Failure to renew your LEI will put it into a LAPSED status in the Global LEI System index. LAPSED status is not good for your legal entity, it could mean transactions are blocked or the risk of non-compliance fines.
To reactivate LAPSED LEI use the following instructions:
- Log in to your LEIpapa account.
- Complete and submit the LEI registration.
- If your LEI is currently managed elsewhere, first you need to transfer your LEI to LEIpapa and RapidLEI.
